Lavington Rural Fire Brigade’s community letter box drop this year will highlight a fact many residents may overlook.

“We’ve done it for at least five years, we do 17,000 flyers, which is all of Albury, volunteers deliver them,” brigade captain Bruce Barnes said.

He urged people to read the information, consider donating and think about their own fire preparations.

“Houses can burn in the middle of town, same as what happened in Canberra,” he said.

Mr Barnes pointed out fire trucks needed clearances of at least 3.5 metres high and 3m wide to access long driveways.

“If we can’t fit a fire truck up their driveway, we can’t help them,” he said.

And just as volunteers will deliver the pamphlets, they will also fight fires in the hills around Albury.

“If they see smoke on the hill, it’s put out by volunteers nine times out of 10,” Mr Barnes said. “People that have left their work and lost money to go put a fire out to look after the community.”
