By his own account, Sproule had an “up and down” season for the Murray Bushrangers and the Allies in the AFL national championships and will now play the waiting game.
The 18-year-old, who stands at 197 centimetres, has had visits from West Coast, Carlton and his favourite club St Kilda ahead of the draft and would jump at the opportunity to play alongside his childhood hero Nick Riewoldt.
“It's pretty nerve-wracking, but it's also exciting at the same time and I’m really looking forward to the opportunity if I get it,” Sproule said.
“Anything can happen on draft night so I just have to wait and see.”
Sproule, along with fellow Tiger Max Lynch, Corowa’s Ryan Garthwaite and and former Albury product Will Setterfield, who made the move to Caufield Grammar, could make it one of the most successful drafts for the region in recent history if all find a new home in 2017.
“I’ve always wanted to become an AFL player and it's getting closer and closer, but I just don't know. It could be so far away if it doesn't happen this year,” Sproule said.
“I've had a few home visits and through the AFL academy I've actually spoken to every single club.
“From what I've heard, most clubs are going to take the best available, so it depends on where I rank on their list.
“It's a bit more of an advantage (being tall), especially with clubs looking for taller players these days.”
Sproule started with the Albury Tigers in the under 13s and made his way through the ranks, with the 2015 Ovens and Murray premiership something he will forever cherish.
Before the 2016 season, he had played his whole junior career in the forward line, but this year was thrown in the deep end with the Bushrangers down back.
“The strength of my game now is probably my versatility because I can play forward or back,” he said.
“I didn't play for Albury this year because I was travelling a lot. I think I was away about 12 weeks in a row.
“Playing division one championships for the Allies and the TAC Cup grand final were my highlights.
“It was devastating we couldn't get up, but it was a really good experience and something we'll never get to do again.”
Sproule admitted if the draft doesn't work out he would like to play in the VFL and find another avenue to the ultimate dream of playing AFL football.
His close friends Fletcher Carroll and Harry Tanner are already on the VFL pathway having signed with Willamstown and Richmond, respectively.
