At Myrtleford long-serving committee member Basil Kneebone was remembered with a minute’s silence before Saturday’s show parade.
Mr Kneebone, who died on November 16, was past president of the Myrtleford Show Society and a current vice president.
“He has been on the committee for something like 50 years, and had been president for 27 years,” said Rosemary Garoni, who took over as president from Mr Kneebone four years ago.
After the parade the show society presented Mr Kneebone’s wife Jean with an artwork from the society’s art show collection “in acknowledgement of the service Basil gave to the show society”, Mrs Garoni said.
She said the show, originally scheduled for October 22, was a success with plenty of community involvement ensuring pavilions were bursting with art, craft and produce.
“We were so lucky with the beautiful day and we had to compete with so many other things but the town got behind it,” she said.
“We had a big display in the pavilions … the community really did get involved.”
The animal nursery and reptile display attracted attention through the day and while the Wangaratta Pipe band was not able to attend there was still lots of activities, with a highlight being the first FreeZA event.
“Jenny Corser from the council organised the FreeZA event,” Mrs Garoni said.
“We had seven different young local bands and they played on the sound shell all day, some of them didn’t look very old but they definitely were really good.
“It was a great success and we hope we can have it again next year.”
The reptile display was also a feature of Corowa’s annual show.
Originally planned for October 9, it was postponed because of weather but Sunday’s rescheduled event went ahead in glorious spring sunshine.
“We try very hard to look for different attractions to be at our show to satisfy all needs,” Norm Wales said in his president’s report.
“This year we have the return of the climbing wall, the snake/wildlife display, a magician, caricature/portrait person and little ponies.”
The Benalla show will be held on December 14 and 15 after it was originally planned for October 14 and 15.
