It was a competition. Radio presenters Hamish and Andy put a call out for their band, Cool Boys and the Frontman to play at five different Year 10 events on a weeklong tour. When I heard, ‘Call if you have an event on Monday 28 November’ on the radio, I called up. Little did I know that Wodonga would be the first stop of their rock bus… at my school, the Catholic College Wodonga Year 10 Formal. The words of student Alexia (Lexi) Brown, we’ll also hear from teacher Rachel Franklin and principal Darren Hovey. In reverse chronological order, see how this formal of all formals became one of Wodonga’s most memorable nights.

“It was pretty full on, it went really quickly. The Veronicas were amazing, their singing was incredible and Hamish and Andy were so funny, it was hilarious.” Alexia Brown – Student
“I’m actually in the car and they’re playing the ACDC song that The Veronicas sang with Hamish and Andy on the radio, that they played at our school. It was an amazing night, I don’t think that will happen again in my life.” Darren Hovey – Principal
“Out of the blink of someone’s eye, we spotted Ruby Rose. Everyone just started screaming … trying to get to her. She was standing there for 15 minutes before anyone noticed her. It was so good. She was even so nice that we got a few photos with her – the students and the teachers as well.” Alexia Brown – Student
“Ruby Rose was definitely a surprise. They absolutely loved it – she stole the show. It was all a bit overwhelming having someone like her there – the kids and staff went pretty nuts! She came out a few times for photo opportunities and was really relaxed and friendly.” Rachel Franklin – Teacher
“We were all keen for Hamish and Andy and The Veronicas. We’ve all been waiting for this night to happen and they made it. The performance was the highlight of the night and Ruby topped it off. Nothing this big has happened to Wodonga.” Alexia Brown – Student
“We only found out a few weeks ago that The Veronicas were coming … we were so excited!” Alexia Brown – Student
“We thought it was going to be big enough just with Hamish and Andy and when we heard about The Veronicas, we thought, ‘What have we got ourselves into?’” Rachel Franklin – Teacher
“I was pretty nervous, not sure how it would unfold. You’re working with their crew … really quickly you realise they were just as excited as we were.” Darren Hovey – Principal
“My older children are great fans of Ruby Rose and I took the opportunity to have a selfie. She was fantastic. She was back and forward with the kids and answering questions – it was lovely.” Darren Hovey – Principal
“The Veronicas came early to do a soundcheck and Ruby Rose came out for a while … she came out before they played, while they played and after they played.” Rachel Franklin – Teacher
“We couldn’t believe that this night would happen. It’s more than we could ask for.”

“We had to make it a private event … our friends and family all wanted to be there. I’m sure everyone in our year level had an amazing time!” Alexia Brown – Student
It’s been a wonderful thing for the Albury-Wodonga region – it’s put the community in a great light. I’m just happy that it’s been Wodonga featured. It creates a lot of interest in our region … why did they go there? Already the Year 9’s are thinking how can I top that! It’s great that kids of our region dream big – these opportunities spring up out of nowhere. Great things happen up our way!” Darren Hovey – Principal
