Border primary schools have praised the Victorian government’s bold plan to ensure all students can swim 50 metres by grade 6 despite concerns around the cost of lessons.

Wodonga Primary School principal Pam Thibou-Martin welcomed the move, and said it was not an issue of money.
“I’m for any policy that will keep kids safe,” she said. “In the North East we're surrounded by beautiful bodies of water and it’s supportive to our young.”
But the Opposition's education spokesman Nick Wakeling, who visited Wodonga this week, blasted the government for not providing financial assistance to schools.
Swimming lessons will become mandatory from term one next year.
