A come and try day was hosted by 25-year veteran and double amputee Dennis Ramsay in Wodonga at the weekend.
Mr Ramsay had a double below-knee amputation in 2008 following a serious illness.
He was joined by about 15 other soldiers with a range of illnesses and disabilities for wheelchair basketball and rugby.
“You can’t left life slow you down,” he said.
“You can’t let an injury slow you down because things happen in your mind and you don’t get better.
“Sports are good physically and psychologically for recovery.”
Mr Ramsay served two tours of East Timor and tours of Iraq and Afghanistan.
He said participants had injuries including back problems, depression and post traumatic stress disorder.
The weekend was also open to the public.
Mr Ramsay hosts wheelchair sports in Wodonga each Saturday.
