The Bushies were missing three star players, including coach Matt Armstrong, but it doesn’t take away from the Phoenix’s achievement.

“It’s one of the best wins I’ve had in first grade,” Callum Langlands said.

“This could mean so much for New City.

“It’s going to give all our young people a bit of hope and belief in ourselves.”

Tallangatta collapsed to 7-55 before it rallied.

Number eight Lachie Paton and second-gamer Jacob Schmidt posted 45 for the eighth wicket, with the latter then combining in a half-century stand with Daniel Bond.

Schmidt finished unbeaten on 68, with eight boundaries as the Bushies worked their way to 189.

“They bowled and fielded really well,” Tallangatta’s Sam Stephens said.

“(Dapinder) Singh bowled decent areas, and made you play a lot.

“They also had three run outs.”

Dave Avery fell to a direct throw, Greg McGillivray was dismissed for a duck, while Bond fell late in the innings.

Haydyn Roberts then launched into the Bushies’ attack, blasting his highest score of the season with six boundaries in a quickfire 28.

“That took the pressure off the middle order,” Langlands said.

“He was hitting the ball so clean and so hard, it was good to watch.”

Dapinder Singh then combined in a 55-run stand for the third wicket with boom teenager Liam Fitzsimmons.

“’Dap’ is the life of the team, he came out of nowhere,” Langlands said.

“His technique might not be flawless, but he can hit the ball.

“He batted so beautifully, and put so much pressure on Tallangatta.”

The Phoenix pushed its way to 7-152, needing another 38 for the drought-breaking victory.

Langlands then combined with Isaac Hawkins, the pair finishing unbeaten on 31 apiece.

“Isaac’s only 19, he batted really well, ticking the strike over,” Langlands said.

It was New City’s first win since round two last season, breaking a 14-month losing run.

“A big cheer went around the ground when they passed the score,” Stephens said.

“It’s good to see them get a win.

“The last time we lost to New City, we won the flag.”

As well as a tough start to the season for the Phoenix, it’s also been disruptive.

Coach Anthony Baker stepped down and the club parted company with captain Dylan Wright.

“Rod Heriot is an older guy, who’s captaining us now, and he wants to be there to help make our younger fellows better players,” Langlands said.

“We always write things up on the board prior to the match, and we had six boxes to tick yesterday.

“We wanted to bat 50 overs and make 200.”

The win coincided with the past players and sponsors day.
