The scene of the crash was discovered just before 7am, however police believe the car may have left the road some hours earlier.

Police are yet to determine the exact cause of the crash, however it is believed the car struck a tree after veering off the Edi-Cheshunt Road.

Both the driver and passenger are from Edi Upper.

The female passenger was airlifted to the Royal Alfred Hospital, where she remains in an induced coma with serious head and pelvic injuries.

Senior Constable Rohan Clapham said it was a tragic accident.

“So far we've been unable to determine the time or cause of the collision,” he said.

“It could have been as early as eight or nine o’clock on Sunday night since the crash occurred on such a quiet road.

“Excessive speed doesn't appear to be a factor, but we don't know if it was due to fatigue, or they swerved to avoid wildlife or something else. 

“All of that is still to be determined.

“The passenger was very lucky to have survived, although her injuries are very serious.

“We’d just urge people to take care on the roads in the coming weeks.

“Take regular breaks, change drivers if possible, don’t push it – just arrive alive.” 

Road accidents have claimed the lives of 271 Victorians in 2016.
