Diagnosed with Asperger’s Disorder and ADHD as a toddler, Sierra Johnston, 10, got her belt at Border Karate School on Wednesday.

Mum Tahlie Jackson said Sierra had never been disciplined in four years at the Thomas Mitchell Drive dojo and often helped out younger students.

“She gets an incredible sense of self-worth from it,” she said.

“Life can be messy for a child on the spectrum but she knows the expectations from karate and she fits in beautifully.

“Instead of realising her deficits, this has shown her, her strengths.”

Initially Ms Jackson was advised Sierra needed medication and homeschooling. 

“She is in mainstream school, not on medication and a role model at karate,” she said.

Sansho instructor Barbara Purss said Sierra was the first child with autism to gain a black belt.

“She’s got great focus.”
