Gusts of up to 124 km/h have been recorded at Mount Hotham as damaging winds cross the state of Victoria. Elevated and alpine areas in the north-east region will be affected. A cease harvest advice has been issued at 1230 today. Landholders and contractors are advised to resume when individual conditions are suitable.

A strong cold front over central Victoria will continue to progress eastward, clearing the east of the State tonight as a deepening low pressure system moves south of Tasmania.
DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 110 km/h are expected with and ahead of the front across alpine areas. Behind the front winds near the coast are expected to average 40 to 50 km/h with possible gusts to around 90 km/h. The winds are expected to gradually ease from the west later this afternoon and evening.
The highest gusts to 10:30am include:
- 124 km/h at Mount Hotham at 9:05am
- 104 km/h at Mount Buller at 10:09am
- 102 km/h at Mount Gellibrand at 5:19am
Locations which may be affected include Warrnambool, Portland, Geelong, Wonthaggi, Frankston and Falls Creek.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
- Keep clear of fallen power lines;
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 pm AEDT Thursday.

Damaging winds heading for higher elevations; warning issued
A severe weather warning has been issued for parts of the north-east of Victoria including Falls Creek.
The Bureau of Meteorology continued its severe weather warning for much of Victoria today, with wind gusts as high as 90km/h expected to hit the higher elevations of our region.
In detail:
A strong cold front over western Victoria will reach central districts later this morning then cross the remainder of the State during the late afternoon and evening as a deepening low pressure system moves south of Tasmania.
DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 50 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h are expected with and ahead of the front across southern and mountain areas of Victoria and may reach 110 km/h across elevated areas (above 1200 metres). Winds are expected to ease following the front, although gusts around 90 km/h will remain a risk along the coastal fringe.
Locations which may be affected include Horsham, Warrnambool, Seymour, Maryborough, Ballarat, Geelong and Melbourne.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
* Keep clear of fallen power lines;
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 am AEDT Thursday.
A cease harvest advice will be issued from 1230 today, Thursday 8th December.
Landholders and contractors are advised to resume when individual conditions are suitable.
