It seems if you headed out on Thursday, day one, you picked the best day to fish.
There’s been plenty caught since, but opening day seemed to be the pick of them by all reports.

There’s been some belters caught too, with quite a few over one metre, a few 1.200s and we also saw a couple of photos of a 1.300.
They seemed to come from all over the place too, with just about any area you care to mention yielding fish.
Those big blokes might be a thing of the past though for a lot of people, as this massive black water event continues its way downstream, killing hundreds, if not thousands, of cod as it goes.
I must admit I’m not an authority on this topic and I’m a little unsure of the exact areas that have been affected.
It seems that the Edwards, Wakool and a few other rivers and creeks in that area got hit pretty badly and from where they enter the Murray downstream things just get worse.
It’s really worth a look at a video presented by Rod McKenzie, which shows just how much devastation is taking place.
Just jump onto my Russell Mason Facebook site to check it out or type in Blackwater Cod Deaths 2016 in YouTube.
I don’t want to depress you but it’s worth a look.
The black water has made its way as far as Renmark now and will obviously continue to kill cod and heaps of other water life as it meanders on to the mouth of the Murray.
At A Glance
Dartmouth: Didn’t have as much boat traffic last weekend, as you’d expect, but those that hit the lake did just fine.
Lead line, with King Cobras, Tassies or Crickhoppers behind, did well, as did those using the same lures behind fenders or downriggers.
The fish do seem to be getting down a bit now and it’s becoming more important to use an attractor to draw the fish up or a downrigger to get down amongst them.
The odd ones are still being flat lined off the top but that’ll just get tougher as the weather warms up.
Streams: Just keep getting better and with a few hoppers starting to show up, those little buggers will fatten up faster than a Sumo wrestler in a Cadbury factory!
Fly, lure and bait are all accounting for fish in every area I can think of, so it’s all looking great for the Christmas break in a couple of weeks.
Lake Hume: It just keeps improving, with a couple of fishos picking up big numbers of Yellas and also a few reasonable red fin over the past week.
Steve McPherson bagged 19 in one session last week.
I’ve also heard of two other bags of 17.
My young bloke Ben landed a few small keepable reddies, a small yella and one cod, of 62cm, on Monday on the troll.
