With Graeme Goudie unavailable, McMahon jumped at the chance and defeated Tony Williams 36-12.
Bill Campbell accounted for Brian Hogg 25-19 and Klive Liverton defeated Matt Robertson 28-19.
Benalla scored its only win with Bruno Meneguzzi upstaging Chris Langdon 21-19.
The victory puts Rutherglen back in the top four and firmly in the mix for finals action.
Rutherglen, who has led at half-time in each of its matches this season, holds a 3-3-1 win-loss-draw ratio.
Wodonga defeated YMGCR 95-82, Wangaratta edged out winless Myrtleford 97-94 and Corowa Civic accounted for Yarrawonga 98-85.
Play will continue on Saturday before the break.
