Wodonga Basketball Association and Wodonga Senior Secondary College want to develop two indoor multi-use courts at the school, which would be available for community use out of school hours.

A submission to Wodonga Council proposed the association co-ordinate the community use and contribute to loan repayments and maintenance costs.

The council on Monday night will consider whether to support the project’s funding application to the Victorian government’s shared facilities fund.

Wodonga Basketball Association president Tina Palermo said the demand for courts far exceeded supply.

“We use the basketball stadium four nights a week at the moment and we could use it five nights a week, all time slots, if we had the availability. We have to hire a separate court to run our representative program, which costs about $15,000 a year and that’s just to run the training.

“If we had another two-court facility, we could centralise all our training and perhaps run some of our competitions out of that other stadium. It actually opens up avenues for us to attract national competitions … it means our bid would be looked upon more favourably than what it has been in the past.”

Council officers recommended supporting the funding application, which did not require a major council capital contribution.

“This project will remove pressures from council to provide additional indoor courts in Wodonga for the short to medium term, which allows council to focus on other capital priorities within the city,” the report said.
