Authorities have detected the presence of the viruses in mosquitoes earlier than usual in the season and in larger numbers thanks to the spring’s big wet.
NSW Health said the Border community should check that insect screens on buildings are in good condition and to use effective repellent and appropriate clothing when outside, especially near water.
Entomologist Richard Marchant, who works with Musuem Victoria, said the viruses were a serious health issue.
“They are debilitating diseases,” he said.
“They give you symptoms like chronic fatigue, glandular fever, and headaches.”
