Environment Protection Authority Victoria announced before Christmas the delay of a report into the extent of the problem.
Wangaratta Council chief executive Brendan McGrath said then the consultant might still have some preliminary results ready by the December 30 deadline.
But Wangaratta mayor Ken Clarke confirmed on Friday nothing more would arrive this year.
“The EPA wanted some further things in it and we’re now looking at middle to late January,” Cr Clarke said.
The North Wangaratta Recreation Reserve oval has been closed since May, affecting North Wangaratta Football and Netball Club.
AFL North East Border regional general manager John O’Donohue said getting the ground tested remained a priority.
“At this time of year, the extra month shouldn’t be relevant, but the sooner it’s resolved the better, obviously,” he said.
“We understand there’s processes that need to be followed, but they can be frustrating at the same time.”
