The annual Marcus Fraser Ambrose includes a feast of golf over the two days, with all money raised going back into the local club.
Fraser is delighted to be back home for the sixth edition of the event after a challenging 2016 season on the European Tour.
“It was probably my most inconsistent year, but the pleasing thing was there was some good results,” Fraser said.
“Obviously winning a tournament doesn’t come around too often, so to be able to do that in Malaysia last year was pleasing.
“The Olympics and couple of other good results gave me plenty of positives to take out of it.
“I’ll be in Europe for the next couple of years and will wait and see what it holds.”
Fraser has been pleased with the way the event has continued to grow each year.
“The hard work of (organiser) Shaun Whitechurch has made it what it is to today,” he said.
“It’s great for the club and the town that we can raise plenty of money for the golf club, which is what it’s all about.
“It seems like we keep squeezing in more and more players each year, which is good because it means there’s more people enjoying the facilities we have.
“Every cent goes to the golf club and the town benefits because all the motels are pretty busy from having more people, with a lot travelling from interstate.
“It’s nice to be able to do something for the club.
“They provided a facility there when I was a junior along with my brothers and a lot of other kids, so hopefully we can all do our bit to make sure it stays there for our kids.”
Dual Brownlow Medallist with Collingwood in 1979 and Melbourne in 1984, Peter Moore, heads the list of celebrity guests, which also includes V8 Supercar drivers Tim Slade, James Moffat and Jack Perkins and Australian Olympic shooter James Willett, who will join the group for a sports function at the club on Saturday night.
“They’re pretty excited about coming up,” Fraser said.
“Tim drives for Brad Jones Racing in Albury, so he was a good connection to have and Jack Perkins and James Moffat were up a couple of years ago to play in the event and couldn’t wait to get back.”
Fraser kicks off his 2017 campaign on February 9 when he heads to Malaysia to defend his Maybank Championship crown, before returning to Australia for the Perth International on February 16.
“It’s held at a different course this year, but it’s the same tournament,” he said.
“I don’t get to experience it too often (being defending champion) so I’ll try to enjoy it as much as I can.”
