A top ride from Wagga apprentice jockey Lily Coombe proved the difference as Vinnie Vega ($3.40) captured the $20,000 Wagga Scamper (1000m) at Murrumbidgee Turf Club.
Vinnie Vega had finished second at his past two starts, both at Wagga, but managed to go one better and hold out smart Canberra pair Miss Liffey ($7.00) and Supa Vision ($14.00) in a thrilling finish.
The win pleased Davison, who has his sights on the $50,000 Flat Knacker (900m) with Vinnie Vega.
“He’s been thereabouts and has been a little bit stiff,” Davison said.
“With the pace on today we lobbed second or third and were able to sit just off them, instead of being the hunted.
“Once he levels up, he’s always in for the dog fight. He’s a real little trier.”
Davison also saved praise for Coombe’s ride.
“It was the perfect ride,” he said.
“Lil gets on well with him and stays on him.”
Vinnie Vega, now a winner of six races and more than $100,000, got home by a long head, with a half head between second and third.
Brett Cavanough’s pair Just A Bullet and Centauro were next in fifth and sixth, with the sole Wagga-trained horse, Kingia, sixth.
Matthew Dale’s $2.70 favourite, Bitburg, tired to finish last.
