Brock Kusen, 19, is facing charges including dangerous driving causing death over the fatal crash on Rutherglen-Springhurst Road at Lilliput on June 1 last year.
He has been on bail since he was charged by the Major Collision Investigation Unit in November and faced Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
Kusen’s barrister Sally Wilson did not reveal any of the issues in the case, but booked in another court date in four months’ time.
“We’re looking at a one-day committal hearing on May 18,” she said.
The defence will question five witnesses on the evidence provided to police, including the MCIU’s reconstruction specialist, who will appear in court via video link.

Kusen did not give any indication if he would plead guilty or not guilty.
Wearing a purple shirt and navy pants, the teenager sat still and breathed deeply with a solemn expression as the legal representatives discussed the case.
He was supported by what appeared to be a family member.
The parents of Miss McLennan’s fiance were also in the courtroom, but declined to make any comments or ask questions when offered by Magistrate Ian Watkins.
Police at the time believed Kusen was heading home from work in his BMW sedan when he allegedly drifted onto the wrong side of the road about 6.30am.
A woman in a Ford Falcon tried to evade the car, just clipping it before careering 200 metres off the road and through a fence.
The car came to rest safely in a paddock and she was not seriously injured.
Miss McLennan was not so lucky and collided head-on with the BMW.
Her car skidded off the side of the road following the impact and she suffered fatal injuries.
The 23-year-old’s death was felt across the North East and she was described as a beautiful, loving and caring friend and family member, as well as a dedicated nurse at Wangaratta Hospital.
Kusen was also trapped for more than 90 minutes after the crash and was taken to hospital by ambulance with serious face and leg injuries.
He will remain on bail until his next court appearance.
