Lavington has won it’s opening two matches of the season by a combined total of three shots, but now finds itself four points clear on top of the table.
The Panthers produced a two-shot aggregate win against Culcairn on Saturday, a team who defeated them twice last season, a week after scraping over the line to beat Henty at Henty by the barest of margins.
“We’ve been cutting it fine, but we go to the top of the ladder with that win and we’re the only undefeated side,” Lavington’s Les Waldron said.
“It’s going to be very close, which is good for the competition.
“I don’t think any side can go in each Saturday thinking they’re going to win.
“It’s good for the game and keeps people on their toes.”
Waldron’s side took seven points for the victory and one point for its only rink win on the day, with Culcairn claiming two points.
Kenny Allan’s 29-19 result against Culcairn’s Jim Lee set up the victory.
Adrian Pantling went down in a close encounter to Terry Hensel, 16-19, while Culcairn’s Dave Trebley skipped his side to a 24-19 win over Brian Linehan.
Lavington has been missing some key names early in the season, which makes the result even more impressive.
“Fred Markham and Darren Moore have been out and hopefully we’ll get them back to strengthen us even more,” Waldron said.
“Darren has been a top bowler in the district and will help us out and Fred is a skipper.
“Henty at Henty was a good win last week and Culcairn beat us twice last year.”
In the other round two clashes in grade three, Commerical brought competition favourites North Albury back to reality, hammering the Hoppers 61-41
In his first season skipping in the top grade, Commerical’s David Barnes comfortably accounted for Stephen Broad, 21-10, Les Murphy was too strong for Norm Honey, 20-9, while North Albury’s only point came thanks to a rink win for Allen Ross over Bernie Mahlo, 22-20.
Lastly, Howlong reversed its fortunes from the opening round to come away with a 66-47 triumph against Henty.
Wayne Daly defeated Kim Maher, 28-19, John Dawson edged out Glen Harrison, 19-15, while Phil Slater completed the clean sweep for Howlong with a 19-13 victory against Peter Forck.
Lavington travels to Howlong next Saturday, while Commerical hosts Henty and North Albury is at home to Culcairn.
