About 8.50pm, emergency services were called to a farmhouse in the town with reports of an incident.
Wodonga Detective Leading Senior Constable Andrew Leonard said police came across a 58-year-old man who had sustained a stab wound to the back.
“Initial reports were of multiple stab wounds, but it was determined to be a single wound to the rear of the back,” he said.
“The 58-year-old Tintaldra man was subsequently airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital by helicopter.”
Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen confirmed the air ambulance was called to a home on Murray River Road just before 9pm.
“We were called to the property for a reported stabbing,” he said.
“A man in his 50s received injuries to his upper body and was airlifted in a serious but stable condition.”
Detective Leading Senior Constable Leonard said a man, who also lived at the Tintaldra address, was taken into custody.
“A short time after that, police arrested a 59-year-old man without incident,” he said.
“He was then conveyed to Wodonga police station, where he has been assisting police with their inquiries.
“We believe (the incident) is the result of a domestic situation.”
The Border Mail understands the two men were related.
Police units from Walwa, Corryong, Bethanga and Dederang were called to the stabbing and many officers helped monitor the crime scene late into the night.
The 59-year-old man was charged on Sunday afternoon with recklessly causing injury.
Detective Leading Senior Constable Leonard said police were waiting for the victim to receive treatment before interviewing him.
“He is currently in surgery at Royal Melbourne in a serious but stable condition,” he said.
“We’re hoping to interview him today.”
The Border Mail contacted the Royal Melbourne Hospital for a condition update, but due to limited details, none could be given.
Detective Leading Senior Constable Leonard said it would be alleged a kitchen knife was used to cause injury.
The 59-year-old man will face Wodonga Court in coming weeks.
