Gillard won the 500m swim, 20km ride and 5km run in just over 56 minutes from Brendan Murray.
“I was second or third out of the water and then got the lead on the bike,” Gillard said.
“It’s been a few years since I have done this.
“I used to do it when Tim Berkel was an up and coming junior.
“I had an Achilles injury in 2007 and was out of the sport for seven or eight years.
“It’s only the last 2-½ years that I’ve got back into it.”
Gillard has been competing in half ironman events and is keen to have another shot at the gruelling Hawaiian Ironman.
He previously raced in Hawaii in 1996 and 1997.
In the women’s event, Julia Rossiter was victorious.
Laura Gillard and Jack Grigg took out the girls and boys competitions.
Sixty-three starters took part with an aquathon the next event on the calendar.
