Albury Mayor Kevin Mack has called for increased funding for the city’s only women’s refuge after a domestic violence survivor shared her story with The Border Mail.

Cr Mack welcomed a possible round-table with services but said funding for “overwhelmed” services for survivors of domestic violence was most important.
“If Betty’s Place, the only women’s refuge, is under-funded, what does that mean for everything else?” he said.
“If we’re going to achieve anything, more money needs to be spent on providing support services.”
Cr Mack said this should be “coupled with significant penalties for breaching AVOs.”
“They’re put in place as a level of safety to the person that’s being oppressed, but there’s no guarantee and that was quite clear in the story on Saturday,” he said.
“I think the police are doing as much as they possibly can with the system in place.
“We need to provide appropriate penalties for breaching AVOs.”
