Monday’s maximum temperature was 39.3C and the mercury was still sitting above 30C at 2am, before a cool change moved through, dropping the overnight minimum temperature to 23.2C at 7am Tuesday.
It was the warmest night this year, the previous two Januaries saw minimums of 26C, with the hottest January night since records were kept at Albury Airport in 1994 tipping 26.8C.
“It really isn’t very uncommon to get minimum temperatures above 20C in January there,” he said.
“It’s very common to get days above 40C, and even multiple days above 40C, this time of the year,” Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Scott Williams said.
“One thing about this year is there hasn’t been many cool days, you’ve only had two days that haven’t got to 30C, You’re averaging 33C so that’s a bit above the long-term average.”
