Queensland’s Lakeisha Patterson received a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to sport as a gold medallist at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
Born in Wodonga, Patterson still has relatives in this region.
The swimmer, then 17, won six medals at Rio in September, including gold in the S8 women’s 400m freestyle and 4x100m women’s 34 point freestyle relay.
Her individual victory set a world record and was Australia’s first gold medal of the Games.
Patterson also earned silver medals in the medley relay, 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle as well as bronze in the 200m individual medley.
At the 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships she won five medals, gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay, two silvers and two bronze.
This followed her 100m freestyle bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games the previous year.
