But club president Greg Lumby believes Jacka made a life-time of memories in his short time with the Cats before dying, aged 35, on Saturday morning.

“Karl was a special person,” Lumby said.

“It didn’t matter if you were the greatest player on the field or you were filling the water bottles for the juniors each week. 

“He would make time for everyone.

“Karl was an outstanding coach and communicator but more importantly a terrific fellow and we are so privileged to have known him even though it was for a short time.”

Jacka and Damien Wilson had been appointed co-coaches of Rutherglen this season.

Jacka, who had been battling stomach cancer since last July, started his football career at Lavington before spending time at the Henty, Balranald, Howlong and Wodonga Raiders football clubs.

Only a fortnight ago, 16 of Jacka’s 2009 Balranald premiership team made the trek from western NSW to see their coach.

“That was such a thrill for Karl,” Lumby said.

“It meant a lot to him.

“It wasn’t just Rutherglen that was touched by him as he had one of those smiles that would light up a room as soon as he walked in.

“You couldn’t help but follow him.”

Jacka also coached Howlong and had strong ties with the St Patrick’s Cricket Club.

The real estate agent and salesman is survived by his wife Cristy and daughter Lucy.

Cristy said the family had been touched by the community support.

“We are just overwhelmed in the most positive and beautiful way by all the heartfelt messages,” Cristy said.

“We always knew how special, unique and influential he was but his impact on the world is far greater than what we truly knew.

“He was an amazing father and he simply idolised Lucy.

“It's not possible for a little girl to be more loved by her dad.”

Jacka’s funeral is likely to be held at Lavington Oval on Friday morning.
