A majority of agricultural or horticultural properties across Australia have access to, or own, a quad bike and use them on a daily basis in their business operations.
These machines can be very dangerous if operated incorrectly and unfortunately account for approximately 20 deaths across Australia annually.
To assist in accident prevention, Wodonga TAFE delivers training in the operation of quad bikes.
These courses are delivered on campus or in the workplace.
Many employers are not aware that employees must have passed a specific unit of competency to operate a quad bike.
The wearing of a helmet is essential when operating a quad bike and the installation of an Operator Protection Device reduces the potential crushing of the operator in a rollover incident.
Currently, the NSW and Victoria governments have a rebate scheme in place for the fitting of an OPD.
The conditions of the scheme vary from state to state.
Depending on your location, you need to contact Worksafe Victoria Quad Bike Rebate or Worksafe NSW Quad Bike Rebate schemes.
Quad bikes are classed as rider active machines.
This means you are required to use your body weight and position for balance and to counteract the change in the centre of gravity.
The centre of gravity varies when turning, travelling up, down or along steep grades and when attachments such as spray units and trailers are fitted to the bike.
Children are victims of many of the quad bike accidents that occur, as their body weight and strength is not sufficient to control the quad bike.
Operators must be 16 years of age or older to operate the standard size quad bike used on most properties.
