The teenager had been trying to break up an altercation between two people at Wodonga Senior Secondary College.
A further altercation occurred and the boy was injured about 11am on Tuesday.
Police attended and the teenager was taken to hospital in a stable condition by paramedics.
Sergeant Tony Chamberlain said the incident had been seen by many people.
“We're trying to get statements from key individuals, which includes both staff and students,” he said.
"There are a lot of witnesses, given it's occurred in the school, in relation to the altercation.
“At this stage I can say there's been an altercation and the amount of force is still being ascertained.”
A student left the school following the incident.
Several people who appeared to be family members were at the scene before the youth was taken to hospital.
