UPDATE: Man was fleeing police before Wendouree crash | Photos

UPDATE: 2.10pm:

Police tried to intercept the car that allegedly caused this morning’s crash in Wendouree, but say there was never a pursuit.

The driver of the vehicle, a 20-year-old Redan man, fled following the collision but was arrested a short time later in Redan. 

Police say they tried to intercept the car in Dowling Street as it didn’t have tail lights, before it sped away.

Victoria Police have just released this statement:

“Police attended following a collision in Wendouree this morning. 

Patrolling members attempted a routine intercept on Dowling Street shortly before 6am after a Holden Commodore was observed travelling with no tail lights. 

The car then allegedly increased their speed and fled down the road. 

No pursuit was initiated. 

A short time later the car was involved in a collision with a Mazda hatchback at the intersection of Howitt Street and Creswick Road. 

The driver and single occupant of the Mazda, a 42-year-old woman, was conveyed to hospital in a serious but stable condition. 

The passenger of the Holden, a 25-year-old Sebastopol man, sustained non-life threatening injuries and was conveyed to Ballarat Base Hospital. 

The driver of the vehicle, a 20-year-old Redan man, fled following the collision but was arrested a short time later in Redan. 

He is currently assisting police with their enquiries.”

The road has been opened but there are still altered traffic conditions in place.

UPDATE, 11AM:

Three people are in hospital after a serious two-car crash in Wendouree this morning.

Police said a 42-year-old woman was taken to the Ballarat Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition, while a 25-year-old man and another 20-year-old man were also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  

Police said the woman was travelling in a separate car to the two men. 

Police said the circumstances of the crash are still being determined and they are due to release a statement later today.

EARLIER:

Early morning traffic will be thrown into chaos this morning after a serious two-car crash in Wendouree.

Both Creswick Road and Howitt Street are closed to traffic after the collision, which occurred just before 6am today.

Two people have been taken to hospital in a stable condition as a result of the accident, according to Ambulance Victoria.

The crash brought down power lines, which are still live at the moment.

Traffic is closed in both directions and is expected to remain so for some time.
