The former Socceroo and Melbourne Victory cult hero played his first minutes for the club off the bench against Melbourne City last weekend, but is a certainty to start next game after showing glimpses of what he can bring to the Border outfit on the pitch.
After two draws to begin the season, Murray United coach James Coutts is excited to have Thompson at his disposal for the round three clash with Eastern Lions on home turf at La Trobe University.
“We hope the crowd and the local community come out and support it,” Coutts said.
“It’s not every day you get a former A-League star and Socceroo playing on your doorstep and he’s really come in (to the club) and been a part of it.
“I’d love there to be a big crowd to see Archie do his thing.”
Murray United vice-chairman Darren Yates believes Thompson’s first game will spark great interest and he is confident it will draw the club’s biggest ever home crowd.
“The club was created from nothing just three years ago as part of a vision to showcase our local football talent and a pathway to higher honours,” he said.
As one of Australia's most recognisable soccer players, Thompson, along with club ambassador and another Socceroo Josh Kennedy, represents everything that drove the creation of Murray United Football Club.
“(The fact) that he has agreed to share his football talent and knowledge with our club and fans is one of the great coups in the NPL history – not just here, but across the nation.”
