Mrs Morcombe and her husband Bruce will visit the North East for the second annual Dinner For Daniel on March 4 at Club Mulwala.
“A lot of people don’t know we help young victims of crime,” she said. “We’ve got a few nice stories of some kids that we’ve helped who have grown into really nice adults.
“They’ve done well; it was a tragedy at the time but they’ve been able to overcome that tragedy, pull themselves out of it and get on with a good life.
“And then they go on to help other people as well.
“There’s no point just sitting in a chair saying, ‘Poor me’, you need to get up and say, ‘Something happened to me but you need to forget the past, I can help someone else in the future’. You just need to have a positive attitude.”
Originally from Melbourne and with relatives still in Victoria, Mrs Morcombe said her parents and extended family would also attend Dinner for Daniel.
“Yarrawonga-Mulwala is close to our hearts as well, we used to take the boys there for little holidays occasionally,” she said.
Mr and Mrs Morcombe established the Daniel Morcombe Foundation in 2005, less than two years after their son was abducted and murdered while waiting to catch a bus on the Sunshine Coast.
Mrs Morcombe said their Dinner For Daniel presentation would highlight the foundation’s work and child safety resources.
Staying safe online has become a greater focus, with recent foundation videos including one on cyber safety aimed at parents and carers.
“Everything’s just changing all the time, so you just have to keep up to date with it and alter what you do,” she said. “The internet’s a fun place but it can be a dangerous place.”
Television personality and former AFL star Shane Crawford will also take part in Dinner For Daniel, which includes a two-course dinner, drinks and live music from Luke and Beth Dewing.
Organiser Prue McGlynn said Yarrawonga’s Tracie Holgate would host the night and thanked businesses that had shown their support.
