Liam Gransden shot 63 at the Thurgoona Country Club Resort.
Professional Chris Gaunt holds the course record with 64, but Gransden’s score can’t officially replace that as he wasn’t off the back-markers’ tees.
Earlier this month, boom teenager Zach Murray broke the course record at Commercial Golf Resort Albury with a stunning 61.
The pair will contest leading amateur event, the Riversdale Cup, in Melbourne next month.
Gransden had just 23 putts during his stellar round.
“It’s probably the best putting I’ve had,” he said.
“Normally if you miss greens the amount of putts per round goes down because you’re hitting it close, but I hit 16 greens in regulation.
“I was dropping putts from the 15-foot, to 20-foot range.”
The 18-year-old shot 10 birdies and a bogey.
“I bogied the second hole, I pulled it a bit left and caught one of the greenside bunkers,” he said.
“I didn’t quite carry it far enough, I got caught up in the rough just over the bunker, then had an eight-metre chip but didn’t hole it.”
From there though it was a blemish-free round, turning four-under at the break, before charging home with another five birdies.
On the par-four, 324m, 10th hole, Gransden fired his tee shot to within 25m.
“Ten was playing downwind, so I pulled out driver and tried to get it as close to the green as I could, just to leave an easy shot,” he said.
It worked as he hit his approach shot to within a metre for another birdie.
Gransden finished his HSC last year and will spend the next six months practicing and playing as much as possible, prior to attending college in the US from August.
“Over the past year I’ve been pretty set that’s what I was going to do,” he said.
“I did go through Melbourne, like the VIS (Victorian Institute of Sport), I did some training sessions with the under 18 squad and I didn’t like it as much I guess, the coaching didn’t really suit me.
“I definitely think going over there will help with more opportunities.”
The round continues a blistering spell after the youngster shot seven-under at Wodonga a fortnight ago.
He had previously shot eight-under at Wodonga 12 months ago, but he’s rapidly becoming a more consistent player.
He’s now looking to carry the form into the Riversdale Cup, which boasts Robert Allenby and Aaron Baddeley as former winners.
Gransden will also travel to Melbourne weekly for pennant with Commonwealth Golf Club.
He also has the Golf SA Amateur Classic at Royal Adelaide later next month.
