With three cars on track, it was Tim Blanchard in the Cool Drive Commodore that posted the quickest time with a 1:29.26, which had him up the order in seventh, only half a second behind the day’s fastest time set by Nissan’s Rick Kelly.
Tim Slade was just outside the top ten in 11th, with a lap of 1:29.53.
New signing for 2017, Nick Percat, suffered an engine failure and missed the final two hours, but still posted a very respectable 1:29.94.
Kelly’s top of the table time was a 1:28.77.
“I’m pretty happy with that,” Blanchard said when he got out of the car.
“Our one lap pace was pretty good.
“It was a pretty eventful day, we tested a lot of things, mainly the new tyre.
“But all in all, it was a good day and I’m looking forward to Clipsal.”
Tim Slade was fastest in the morning session, but couldn’t repeat the effort in the afternoon.
“I was looking forward to the test day and getting onto the new tyre,” Slade said.
“We’ve been talking about it for so long and it was just good to get out there.
“It wasn’t as different as I thought it would be.
“We found something that worked well when the tyre was a bit worn, but when we tried it with a new tyre it wasn’t as good.
“So like everyone else, we tried a few things and some worked and some didn’t.
“We didn’t finish off as well as we would have liked, but our base set up wasn’t too bad though.
“It was definitely a day where we learnt lots.”
In a rare occurrence for BJR, Percat blew an engine late in the day.
Nevertheless, he had quickly acclimatised himself and was setting competitive times.
Despite the dramas, Percat was upbeat.
“My first day as a BJR driver was very productive,” he said.
“We were running P3 for a while which was good.
“It didn’t end well with an engine drama, which meant I missed the Hollywood laps times at the end there.
“It was good to work with Paul Scalzo, my new engineer, and all the guys, to learn how they work and also get familiar with the car as all the buttons and switches are in different places.
“We’ll put a fresh engine in for Clipsal and away we’ll go,” Percat concluded.
Team boss Brad Jones said it was an interesting day.
“We’ve done very different things with all three. It’s a fantastic opportunity to test at a circuit where we don’t normally get to and try different things,” Jones said.
It’s all hands on deck at the team’s Albury workshop to turn all the cars around for next weekend’s season opener at the Clipsal 500 on the streets of Adelaide.
