Anyone who has chased after a football or run towards one will know how capricious its bounce can be, but also how peculiarly predictable. One bounce, two, and then the third almost always will be higher, slower and loopier. Once, a ball bouncing in this pattern at the old Lake Oval skipped up and through the open window of the press box, which was located under the scoreboard. Fortunately, nothing was spilled.
