The Border Leadership Forum has been established to counter the perception of failing leadership and challenge people to become leaders in their day-to-day lives.
Forum chairman Steve Martin said the event would be all about engaging people.
“We've seen lots of information, surveys and research showing that people are disengaging from leadership of all kinds,” he said.
“Politics forms a big part of that, however business and community are also affected – we need to engage people.
“You often see stories of failed leaders, but we certainly think there are some great examples of leadership out there that we want to showcase.
“We want to encourage people to want to be leaders and to put themselves out there.”
Mr Martin has worked with 2016 Wodonga young citizen of the year Jacob Mildren to put the forum together.
“Working with Jacob on this has been fantastic,” he said.
“I’ve always been fascinated by the impact of mentoring, I've certainly been lucky enough to benefit from it over my time.
“The impact of mentoring can be fantastic, and the Border Leadership Forum is an opportunity for some group mentoring.
“That will come not only through great speakers, but through an informative and interactive format as well.”
Headlining the event will be federal MP Andrew Hastie.
Mr Hastie is a former Wangaratta resident and member of the defence force, and is currently the Liberal member for Canning in Western Australia.
“Andrew is a friend of mine that I've known for around 15 years,” Mr Martin said.
“He's always been committed to making a difference and leading, which is what encouraged him to join the defence forces.
“That is also what drove him towards politics.
“He's a regional MP, albeit in Western Australia, but I think a lot of the issues faced by regional Australians have a lot of commonality.
“Hopefully he'll have some insights to share with us.
“It's not a lecture, it's about hearing people's stories.
“We're hoping to bring people from all different sectors.”
The event will be held at the Albury Tigers Club on March 25 from 7pm.
