Autumn’s here though, so we can now start to expect – or at least hope for – things to settle a little and prepare ourselves for some of the best weather and fishing of the year.
Most rivers and streams are now pretty settled, apart from those influenced by those crazy man-made fluctuations, and the fishing usually reflects that.
I was lucky enough to head up the mountains for an extended weekend with a few mates last week.
And I can tell you, the streams were in perfect nick.
We didn’t have to do too much to catch a feed of typical streamies measuring 20-30cm.
We were lucky enough to nail a 2kg model as well.
If you’re thinking of having a go, make sure you catch a few crickets or hoppers.
Another option is to take a few scrubbies with you.
Drifting unweighted baits was certainly our most successful technique, although we did catch a few on the little Yakamito Slim Minnows as well.
Fishing in general improves at this time of year, so expect to hear plenty more stories about the yellowbellies, cod, reddies and everything else from here on in.

AT A GLANCE
Dartmouth – is still good, but as we keep saying, getting down to the fish is essential.
A downrigger is a major asset at this time of the year in particular. But try a paravane with a Tassie or King Cobra behind if you haven’t got one.
The Mackas are still moving a bit too. But don’t forget, you’re only allowed one.
Mitta River – has been good for the trout above Tallandoon and pretty good for cod below.
Kel Smith took the Ziebath clan up for a five-hour paddle to chase a few cod last Sunday.
Dad John and number one son, Eddie, both managed a fish in the total of three cod, two yellas and a redfin.
Younger son Carl and his young mate from Tumbarumba, Sam, didn’t do so well, but had a great time I’m sure.
Chris Sedgwick and a mate also landed a couple while fishing the same area on the same day.
With the river not varying much in height, it should fish well for quite a while yet.
All fish were caught on wobbly spinnerbaits.
Anyone up for some barra fishing? I’ve had three cancelations for a 13-day bush camping trip to the gulf country starting May 23.
We chase barra, mangrove jacks, queenfish and see all the wildlife you’d expect to see on a trip to the territory.
