The $2.2 million project appeared doomed and destined to be snapped up by either Wagga or Shepparton when Wodonga Council put the Baranduda Fields sporting complex on ice last week.
But frantic behind the scenes discussions involving the Victorian Government, Cricket Victoria, Cricket Albury-Wodonga and council could result in the facility being resurrected.
Funding previously committed of up to $750,000 by cricket bodies could stay on the table.
The council is also in talks with Sport and Recreation Victoria about the Birallee Park option after previously committing $650,000 to Baranduda Fields.
The Birallee Park option would eliminate the need for new ovals to be created which would have been the case at Baranduda Fields.
The Border Mail understands Kelly Park and Martin Park were also considered as alternative sites.
But Birallee Park is an obvious front-runner due to proximity to primary and secondary schools and land availability.
CAW chairman Michael Erdeljac said the project incorporating administration space, indoor and outdoor cricket training facilities and high-standard ovals with turf wickets wasn't dead in the water yet.
"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Albury-Wodonga," he said.
"You couldn't get the planets to align like they have ever again, but we haven't got a lot time left to make it happen.
"The last thing CAW would like to see is a high performance centre based in Wagga, Shepparton or Wangaratta when we can have one here which is the hub of cricket in North-East Victoria and southern Riverina."
Wodonga Council's community development director Deb Mudra confirmed the project could still go ahead.
"These discussions are in their early stages and the council has considered alternative sites across its existing recreational spaces, one option being Birallee Park," she said.
"Those discussions are continuing with Sport and Recreation Victoria and Cricket Victoria about their requirements for a site and we await further direction from them on the next step.
"There is a funding available through the state for this purpose."
