Lawton was unstoppable kicking 7.1 as Terry Burgess’ side snatched victory in the dying minutes of the practice match.
Joe Hansen also produced a strong performance in his first game since undergoing a knee reconstruction.
North Albury coach Clinton Gilson said Lawton stood out inside 50 metres.
“He’s a very good player,” Gilson said. “He took some good marks and is good on the ground as well.”
Corowa-Rutherglen’s Will Robinson bobbed up with three goals while Henry Teunon, Joel Klemke and Aaron Bauerle played well for North Albury.
Daniel Leslie played a half and skipper David Miles came through the clash unscathed.
Burgess said the performance was good for the team’s self-belief.
“It was a good win as we were quite disappointing the week before against Wodonga,” Burgess said.
“We had a good contribution across the board.”
Myrtleford overpowered Wangaratta Rovers at McNamara Reserve.
Despite going into the clash without Brad Murray, Nathan Cossignani, Tim Looby, Liam Harrington, Brady Sharp and Pat Sullivan, the Saints found enough run around the ground to kick clear.
Frazer and Lachie Dale and Riley Sharp won plenty of the ball.
Wangaratta Rovers ruckman Shane Gaston was a notable absentee for the Hawks.
“It was a good hit-out,” coach Leigh Corcoran said.
“We got no injuries and it was good to practice certain things we wanted to practice again.
“Both sides shuffled their teams around in the third quarter.”
Wodonga Raiders impressed in their comfortable win over Tatura.
The Raiders finished with 33 scoring shots to seven despite missing players of the ilk of Jydon Neagle, Brodie Filo, Dean Giles, Tyler Cornish, Brad St John and Ethan Boxall.
Zach and Jordan Rouse, Hayden Clarke and Jackson Kelly stood up for coach Daryn Cresswell while Mark Doolan kicked three goals.
“The younger blokes did really well,” coach Daryn Cresswell said.
“We still have some work to do but there were some encouraging signs and good passages of play.”
An under-strength Albury lost to Canberra Demons by 81 points at Queanbeyan Oval and Yarrawonga and Therry Penola played out a tight match at J.C. Lowe Oval.
