South Albury-based milliner Tania Scott said fashion and headwear for the premier racing event generally followed trends set at metropolitan meetings.
“Turbans have been popular in headwear at city meetings,” she said.
“I would expect to see a lot of green, navy, teal and plum; all of the rich colours.”
Ms Scott said preparations for Albury Gold Cup began in earnest in spring and continued up until the day of the meeting.
She said she had made at least 50 bespoke pieces for the cup this year.
“It’s my busiest time of the year,” Ms Scott said.
“I will still be working on my final piece up until the night before.”
Having stumbled into millinery about eight years ago, Ms Scott opened a shopfront for Tania Scott Designs in Townsend Street in spring 2016.
“I have four daughters and I used to make a lot of hairclips for them,” she said.
“People started asking me to make fascinators and it developed from there.”
Tania Scott Designs also stocks headwear from six other homegrown milliners.
Ms Scott said her millinery designs were generally a bit “edgy”.
She said she was always on the lookout for interesting embellishments and fabrics.
“I love silk, lace and velvet too because I like working with rich textures,” Ms Scott said.
“I’m always collecting pieces as I go.”
Ms Scott said she encouraged women to bring their racing outfits and shoes into the store to help inspire a headpiece.
“Normally women don’t feel comfortable taking their dress and shoes into another shop but we encourage it here,” she said.
“They’re encouraged to keep trying on hats until they’re happy with a style.”
Ms Scott said she had designed a hat for Fashions on the Field presenter Louise Arnold again this year.
She said it would be her last bespoke piece for this year’s meeting.
“But there will still be ladies coming in to buy something off the shelf up until 12pm on Friday,” she said.
Ms Scott said she also designed pieces for women attending meetings at Benalla, Mansfield, Wodonga, Wagga, Sydney and Holbrook.
