The Hawks will make their third successive grand final appearance on the weekend when they take on Mount Beauty at Kiewa.
“We’ve been setting ourselves for the entire year to play against Mount Beauty in this game,” Kiewa captain Shane Streeter said.
“I think they’ve been the team to beat even though the ladder hasn’t reflected it.
“Last time we played them was our first two-day game and we just didn’t adjust.
“We played a one-day style in a two-day game and they got the better of us by a long shot.
“It’s not going to bother us at all, we know we’re a much better side than we were then and have been building up at the right time of the year.”
Streeter said the loss to Dederang in the opening week of finals didn’t hamper the side due to the unavailability of several key players, but he was proud of the effort against Yackandandah in the semi-final, particular the lower order with the bat.
“It’s really good to know if take a hit early, we have the blokes there that have the capacity to put a defendable total on the board,” he said.
“There is still six or seven guys that played in the last two grand finals, one of them we lost, one of them we won, so I think that experience is nice to have when it’s such a similar scenario we’re coming into and playing on our own ground.
“If we can match the performance we had against Eskdale last year, I think we can beat whatever side walks onto the park against us.”
However, the Hawks have one notable absentee in Ryan Bartel who will miss due to representative duties with Victoria Country at the national under 15 titles.
“He started the year on the fringe and we gave him a go because he was really young, but towards the end of the year he’s been a really pivotal part of it for us and grown with every single game,” Streeter said.
“He’s going to be a loss, but the hardest part for him is that he’s put in all the work to get to this point and isn’t going to be able to be there to reap the rewards of it.
“Going up there is not a chance he can turn down, so best of luck to him.”
Mount Beauty captain Alistair Randell admitted his side has been in reasonable form, but still hasn’t put it all together yet.
“In a grand final, anything can happen,” he said.
“Last week, our batting was really good, but our fielding wasn’t so good.”
Randell said Kiewa has been the benchmark during the past three seasons.
“We’ve always tried to our measure ourselves against Kiewa because they’ve been one of the strong sides,” he said.
“Early on, I probably thought it was going to be out of Yack and Kiewa, but obviously only one could get through.
“If you had of asked me at the start of the year, I would have said Kiewa was the side to beat and we’ll obviously have to beat them to win it.”
