The safety measures will form part of a $9 million upgrade to the road from Wangaratta to Bairnsdale, which will also include sealing road shoulders, creating areas for slow vehicles to pull over, and targeted road rehabilitation and bridge strengthening.
The project is a joint $18 million package of works with the federal government.
Northern Victoria MLA Jaclyn Symes said there had been 149 casualty crashes on the Great Alpine Road over the past five years, including eight fatalities and 64 serious injury crashes.
“We are doing everything we can to make this stretch of road a lot safer, to save lives and reduce the risk of serious injuries,” she said.
“We’re making this road safer to ensure our tourism and freight industries continue to thrive.
“These upgrades will make the Great Alpine Road safer for everyone that lives, works, or travels through this area.”
