Filo was one of a number of top-line players who missed the club’s five-goal win over Wangaratta Rovers.
“It was a high pressure, high intensity game which is what we were after leading into the opening round,” Rovers’ co-coach Sam Carpenter said.
Milawa recruit Ben Clarke, Chris Knowles and Isaac Willett impressed for the Hawks.
Rovers were unscathed while Raiders’ star Jydon Neagle is expected to recover from a slight cork.
Wangaratta duo Michael Newton and Josh Porter gave an indication of their class in the four-goal win against Wodonga.
The pair will take a power of stopping, while Wodonga recruits Shaun Flanigan and Jarrod Hodgkin played well.
And Lavington fell to Maribyrnong by five goals.
“We had a slow intensity at the start, that’s why they got the jump on us, but we worked our way back,” captain Luke Garland said.
