The 23-year-old from Wodonga won a spot in next year’s event as part of the 7th Yackoustica Battle, at youth hub The Shed.
Johan, who draws inspiration from 1960s pop, was ecstatic to win.
“When I started writing songs, I set myself an initial goal to the play at the folk festival,” he said.
“It’s a really cool atmosphere with great music.”
The Shed co-ordinator Annette Walton said 30 acts had taken to the stage across the weekend.
“The Shed is all run by young people … the last few years more and more people have come to watch young people’s music,” she said.
The festival celebrated 20 years over the three days and for the first time tickets sold out prior to program release.
Fifty-one acts including Sara Storer and Shane Howard were enjoyed by 2000 ticket-holders, and upwards of 4000 people flocked to the annual Sunday markets.
