In a match with few highlights, Paton controlled play across half-back with Jacob Koschitzke lending good support in his uncustomary role at full-back.
Joe Richards impressed at ground level and big Floyd Bollinghaus took some strong marks around the ground.
“I thought we had control for most of the day but both sides had trouble scoring,” coach Leon Higgins said.
“There were a lot of skill errors and I think the boys were pretty taxed being early in the season and playing on the big ground.
“It was a real battle.”
Wodonga forward Hudson Garoni injured his ankle and didn’t return to the ground after half-time.
The Bushrangers will face their toughest test of the season against Geelong on Saturday.
