In the men, Magpies dominated Wodonga to come away with an 8-1 victory, one goal was all that separated Wombats and Falcons, with the former taking the win 1-0, while Norths and CR United played out a 4-4 draw.
There wasn’t many signs of early season nerves with both Norths and CR United getting their team game going early in the match.
However, Norths had plenty of injury trouble with Jeremy Paine coming off 15 minutes into the first half and Oscar Smart sidelined with 12 minutes left.
The injuries left Norths to play the last 12 minutes with only 10 players while trailing 3-4, but they managed to find the back of the net with less than 20 seconds left to cause a draw.
In the women’s, Falcons finished 2-0 winners against Wombats, Norths and CR United drew 2-2, while Wodonga impressed in its 4-2 victory over Magpies.
A short corner goal was disallowed before Magpies’ Maddison Knight made the breakthrough from another corner after 15 minutes.
Wodonga came out firing in the second half, creating plenty of opportunities, when Shae Billingsly finished off some neat work on the right side to make it 1-1.
Magpies came straight back with Sarah Knight showing great reflexes to deflect the ball high into the goal corner to put her side in front 2-1.
But it was all Wodonga from there, with Dani McLeish and Kyrie Hardwick scoring in the 4-2 win.
