A crime scene was established on the driveway into the station's carpark after two men were involved in an altercation.
One of the men was taken to Albury Hospital by ambulance after he was stabbed once in the abdomen.
The perpetrator has been charged with attempted murder, as well as an array of other offences.
He did not apply for bail, and was remanded to face Wodonga Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
Detective Acting Sergeant Justin Foots said police believed the two men knew each other.
“We believe the cars were following each other to the police station, they've pulled up out the front where both males have exited their vehicles and the altercation has occurred,” he said.
“I know the parties are known to each other, but I'm not exactly sure what the issue was between them.”
The offender, who was travelling in a red Ford ute, followed the victim to the station before allegedly assaulting him.
The knife was recovered from the scene and the alleged offender taken into custody.
Detective Foots said police were not looking for anyone else involved in the incident, but were looking to speak to any witnesses.
“I understand some phone calls were made to police prior to the incident,” he said.
“We believe the parties were known to each other and that they were following one another en route to the police station.
“We are not seeking any other persons in relation to this incident, but we are asking that if there are any other witnesses who haven’t already spoken to police, of they could contact the Wodonga police station.”
While the streets around the station were quiet due to the Good Friday public holiday, Detective Foots said it was deeply concerning such a serious crime had occurred in front of the station.
“It is concerning, it’s not something we see on a regular basis,” he said.
“The victim was coming to us for protection.
“It was fortunate that the victim could be given first aid immediately.
“We don’t like to see this type of thing at all.”
The offender has also been charged with intentionally causing serious injury, recklessly causing injury, assault with a weapon, and conduct endangering life.
