Albury Detective Inspector Winston Woodward said highway patrol officers located the vehicle a short time and pursued the driver through Lavington and East Albury, but lost the car.
“It didn’t last very long,” he said.
The taxi was later found at Sarvaas Park in North Albury, where it had been set of fire and totally destroyed.
Police are investigating and have asked anyone with information to contact Albury police on (02) 6023 9267 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
