With the momentum against the Cats after Magpie coach Josh Maher goaled from a 50m torpedo after the three-quarter-time siren to give his side the lead, the visitors responded brilliantly to remain undefeated.
They kicked eight goals to four in the final quarter with Marty Bahr snaring three.
Connor Galvin was outstanding across half-forward, Duncan McMaster patrolled half-back and Jamie Parr and Hayden Gleeson were constant threats in the ruck and up forward.
Coach Matt Rava said it was a character-building victory.
“We had been threatening all day but turned the ball over too much in the first three quarters,” Rava said.
“At three-quarter-time we spoke about taking a bit more care and looking after each other and in the last quarter we started to capitalise.
“In previous years we have been pushed around a bit by them as they have some solid bodies and I thought we showed some good signs.
“I was really pleased with the effort.”
Maher was outstanding in heavy traffic for the Magpies while his brother, Daniel, played the sweeping role well across half-back opposed to Rava.
Trent Logue and Dale Lappin also turned in good performances.
Howlong wore down Billabong Crows to win by nine points at Oaklands.
In a vastly-improved performance, the Crows led by 13 points at half-time before lapsing and paying the price.
“We wanted to redeem ourselves after the Jindera game and I thought we did that,” coach Danny Stevens said.
“Unfortunately we lapsed for 15 minutes in the third quarter and that was the difference.
“I couldn’t question the commitment of the boys though.”
Howlong midfielder Tim Brook led the revival in the midfield while Charlie Hamilton and Bradley Palipuaminni followed his lead.
Michael O’Riordan continued his strong form in attack with three goals for the Crows and Zac and Riley Kerr won plenty of possessions at ground level.
Culcairn recruit Peter Cook kicked four goals on debut in the Lions’ win over Holbrook.
After a tight three quarters, the visitors took control through Cook, Jed Andrew and John Robbins and went on to win by 34 points.
Aaron Baker played well for Holbrook.
Jindera defeated Lockhart by 100 points and Brock-Burrum first-gamer Hayden Hibberson was best afield in their win over CDHBU.
