Now, Mr Thomas is supporting the marriage equality cause in a very loud way, travelling to Melbourne and back in his ute, decked out in equality stickers.
“I grew up homophobic; I spent nine years in the army and became a plumbing contractor upon leaving the army,” he said.
“When my son came out, I had to ask myself what it is about gay people I didn’t like.
“It came down to unfounded fear, ignorance and prejudice.
“I was confronted with the idea my son wasn’t considered equal in the law.”
Mr Thomas began his journey on Sunday, meeting with Hume Phoenix members and Albury deputy mayor Amanda Cohn in Albury.
“I met some great people in Albury and we’re stopping in 20 towns,” he said.
“We’re asking people to contact their senators and tell them of their support reform to the marriage act.”
