Melbourne-based Smith retraced the inaugural 1930s Qantas flight from Australia to England in a tiny amphibious flying boat, and returned following the Imperial and Pan Am airmail routes via the US, Russia and Japan.
Smith captured the geographic splendour of the world at a leisurely 80 knots.
“The journey was the trip of a lifetime,” he said.
“I find the idea of 1930s era flying boat travel very romantic, even if my small two-seat plane has none of the luxuries that passengers once enjoyed.”
The documentary, Voyage of the Southern Sun, will be shown at Regent Cinemas Albury Wodonga at 6.45pm. Tickets from demand.film or cash sales at the door.
