AWTCo will present six shows only from 17 May to 21 May.
The mega hit musical which had its debut on Broadway in October 2003, was nominated for 10 Tony Awards in 2004, and has gone on to break box office records.
Wicked is the biggest show AWTCo has staged to date, with rehearsals three days a week since January and a cast of seemingly hundreds working behind the scenes to get the show off the ground.
The Border company jumped at the chance to secure the rights to stage this demanding show.
“We have so much remarkable talent here on the Border, from performers, dancers, stage technicians and musicians that the timing of staging Wicked was perfect for the company to pursue,” said Joseph Thomsen, who co-directs the show with Glenn Mancer.
Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, that re-imagines the stories and characters created by L. Frank Baum in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Wicked tells the untold story of the witches of Oz – the misunderstood Elphaba (with the role shared by Amy Murray and Catherine Cunningham) and the very popular Glinda (Venetia Heath), who meet as students at Shiz Univeristy and become roommates.
Following a disastrous meeting with the wizard of OZ, Glinda and Elphaba’s lives change forever, which see them take very different paths that have shocking consequences for Elphaba’s future.
Everything about Wicked is huge. The costumes and set, with its flying bubble which floats Glinda around the stage, to the flying device used to levitate Elphaba high above the audience (while she’s singing) and a clever magical trick with a witch’s broom which you must see to believe.
The music and songs will leave the audience spellbound and wanting more.
There will be four evening performances on Wednesday 17, Thursday 18, Friday 19, Saturday May 20, and two matinee’s on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21.
Tickets are available at the Box Office, by phone on (02) 6043 5610 or at the Albury Entertainment Centre website.
